What is Shoulder Arthroscopy?

Shoulder arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to diagnose and treat various shoulder joint problems. A tiny camera (arthroscope) is inserted into the shoulder through small incisions, allowing the surgeon to see inside the joint on a screen and repair damaged structures using fine instruments. This technique reduces tissue damage, minimizes scarring, and speeds up recovery compared to traditional open surgery.

Who May Need Shoulder Arthroscopy?

You may be a candidate for shoulder arthroscopy if you experience:

  • Chronic shoulder pain that doesn’t improve with rest or physiotherapy

  • Difficulty raising or rotating your arm

  • Recurrent shoulder dislocation or instability

  • Rotator cuff tears or tendon injuries

  • Labral tears or cartilage damage

  • Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)

  • Shoulder impingement or bursitis

  • Bone spurs or loose fragments in the joint

How is the Procedure Done?

Dr. Amandeep Singh Narang – M.B.B.S., DNB (Ortho), MCh (Ortho) from Dundee, U.K. – is a leading orthopedic surgeon offering advanced shoulder arthroscopy at MKW Hospital, Rajouri Garden.

The surgery is usually performed under regional or general anesthesia and takes about 1–1.5 hours. Small incisions (keyholes) are made to insert the arthroscope and specialized tools. Depending on the diagnosis, Dr. Narang may remove inflamed tissue, repair tendons, or stabilize the shoulder joint.

Most patients are discharged the same day and begin physiotherapy within a few days to restore strength and movement. Recovery is faster and less painful compared to open surgery.
